How to Clean Windows Without Streaks

Streaks aren't about effort — they're about technique and timing. Here's how to get glass genuinely clear.

Why Windows Streak

Streaks come from three things: too much cleaner, cleaning in direct sun, and a dirty cloth. Fix those and streaks mostly disappear. More product is not better — residue is what you're seeing.

Tools & Solution

A squeegee and a clean microfiber cloth beat paper towels, which shed lint. A simple solution of water with a drop of dish soap (or water and a little vinegar) works as well as most sprays. Keep a separate dry microfiber for buffing edges.

The Method

Wipe the glass with your solution, then squeegee top to bottom in overlapping strokes, wiping the blade after each pass. Dry the edges and sill with the dry cloth. On the inside, less solution and a final buff with dry microfiber gives the clearest finish.

The Timing Trick

Never clean windows in direct sunlight — the solution dries before you can wipe it, baking in streaks. Cloudy days or shaded windows give you the working time to finish cleanly.

The Other Side

Remember that a streak may be on the outside — you can't always tell which side it's on. That's why truly clear glass usually means doing both, as covered in interior vs. exterior window cleaning.

When to Call a Pro

Interior glass is very doable; exterior and upper-floor windows involve height, heavier residue, and screens — see how often to clean windows and consider a professional for the outside.
