How to Clean Baseboards (and Keep Them Clean)
Baseboards are the detail that quietly makes a whole room look unfinished. Here's the fast way to do them right.
Dust Before You Wash
Always dry-dust first — a vacuum brush attachment or a dry microfiber cloth. Washing over dust just makes muddy streaks. Work along the length of the board, and get the top ledge where dust settles most.
Washing Without Streaks
Use a barely-damp microfiber cloth with a little mild cleaner — too much water can seep behind the trim and lift paint. Wipe, then follow with a dry cloth. For painted baseboards, gentle is the rule; harsh scrubbing dulls the finish.
Corners & Grooves
The detailed grooves and corners are where a cotton swab or an old toothbrush earns its place. This is the difference between “wiped” and “clean,” and it's exactly the kind of detail a professional deep clean covers by default.
