Bell Canyon is a gated canyon community in unincorporated Ventura County (91307), reached through West Hills, with one gate and one road in and out. Spruce Land Corporation, a Boise Cascade subsidiary, bought the land in 1968 and planned about 900 homes on lots of half an acre to 25 acres, marketing room for horses; it took the name Bell Canyon in 1972. The 2020 census counted 677 homes on about 1,700 acres.
Horses are part of the plan: the Cliff May-designed Bell Canyon Equestrian Center has 80 stalls on ten and a half acres, and trails reach the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve. The Bell Canyon Association and a community services district, formed in 1984, run the community and its front gate, staffed 24 hours a day. The Woolsey Fire started on Santa Susana Field Lab land just north of here in November 2018; Bell Canyon was evacuated and homes burned on Hitching Post, Flintlock and Wrangler Lanes.
Entry is through the 24-hour gate, so the professional is added to the gate list once; the same professional returns each visit. Water comes from Ventura County Waterworks District No. 17: all imported State Water Project supply, at 8.3 grains per gallon (about 142 mg/L) in 2025 — enough to spot glass and fixtures.
