Hidden Hills is its own city, not part of Calabasas: incorporated in 1961 as Los Angeles County’s 73rd city, it sits just north of the 101 beside Calabasas, with the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon preserve to the north. A.E. Hanson began developing it in 1950 with signs promising “Full Acre Lots,” and it is still built on that pattern: about 650 home sites on lots of an acre or more.
It is horse country by design. The Hidden Hills Community Association maintains 25 miles of bridle trails and three riding arenas, and its architectural rules call for an “equestrian rural style,” white three-rail fences and room on each lot for stables. Three gatehouses — Long Valley, Round Meadow and Burbank Boulevard — are staffed 24 hours a day, every visitor shows photo ID, and tradespeople are admitted from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, with domestic help on the approved list for Sundays and holidays.
Barn, arena and trail dust come into the house with every pair of boots, so floors, entries and mudrooms carry the load. The whole city was evacuated during the 2018 Woolsey Fire. Las Virgenes Municipal Water District reports an average hardness of 142 mg/L (about 8.3 grains per gallon) for 2025 — enough to spot shower glass and stone around fixtures.
