Santa Rosa Valley is an unincorporated farm-and-horse valley of about 1,170 homes between Camarillo and Thousand Oaks, with the Las Posas Hills to the north, the Simi Hills and Wildwood to the south, and Arroyo Santa Rosa running through it. Most addresses read Camarillo 93012; some read Thousand Oaks. It was a Butterfield stage stop in 1861, and its schoolhouse dates from 1912. Nine in ten homes are owner-occupied, and since 2003 a county Municipal Advisory Council has weighed in on planning and traffic.
The homes are country houses on acreage: 1980s and 1990s ranch homes of roughly 2,400 to 3,000 sq ft on an acre, and newer homes up to about 6,000 sq ft on two to three acres, some in small gated enclaves. County zoning has created two-to-four-acre lots specifically for private horse-keeping, and Santa Rosa Valley Park has two equestrian riding areas. Farm fields, paddocks and riding trails are part of daily life, and they come in through the mudroom.
Fire comes off the hills: the 2018 Hill Fire started on Hill Canyon Road and burned about 4,500 acres without damaging structures, and the whole valley was ordered to evacuate during the 2019 Easy Fire. The water is very hard. Camrosa Water District draws more than half its supply from wells measuring 404 to 572 mg/L of hardness, blended with imported water at 140 — hard enough to scale fixtures and glass quickly.
