Carpet Cleaning Methods: Steam vs. Dry

The two main ways professionals clean carpet work very differently. Here's how steam and dry methods compare — and when each is the better call.

Hot-Water Extraction (“Steam”)

The most common professional method, hot-water extraction injects heated water and solution deep into the carpet, then immediately extracts it along with the loosened soil. Despite the “steam” nickname, it's really a deep rinse. It reaches soil at the base of the fibers, which makes it the gold standard for a genuinely deep carpet clean. The trade-off is drying time — typically several hours to overnight.

Low-Moisture (“Dry”) Cleaning

Low-moisture methods — encapsulation and dry-compound cleaning — use very little water and a solution that crystallizes around soil so it can be vacuumed away. The big advantage is speed: carpets are usable again in under an hour. It's excellent for maintenance and high-traffic commercial spaces, but it doesn't reach deep, ground-in soil the way extraction does.

Which Is Right for You

For most homes, the answer is both, at different intervals: periodic hot-water extraction for a true reset, with low-moisture maintenance in between. Fiber type matters too — wool and delicate natural fibers need gentler handling and careful moisture control. See how often carpets should be cleaned to build a schedule.

When to Call a Professional

Rental machines rarely extract enough water, which can leave carpets over-wet and invite mildew — a real risk in humid coastal areas. For set-in soil, pet issues (see removing pet stains), or anything valuable, a professional's equipment and fiber knowledge is worth it.
