Commercial vs. Residential Cleaning: What’s the Difference?

They sound similar, but cleaning a workplace and cleaning a home are different disciplines. Here's how they differ — and why it matters for your business.

Scope & Scale

Residential cleaning focuses on lived-in spaces — kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms. Commercial cleaning covers workplaces: reception and common areas, private offices, conference rooms, break rooms, and — critically — shared restrooms used by dozens of people a day. The scale is larger and the traffic heavier, so the work is built around consistency across a whole facility rather than one household.

Scheduling

Homes are cleaned during the day on a weekly or biweekly rhythm. Offices are usually cleaned after hours or before opening, so work isn't disrupted, and often on a more frequent schedule — nightly or several times a week for high-traffic spaces. Building the right office cleaning frequency is its own decision.

Standards & Compliance

Commercial spaces answer to higher and sometimes regulated standards — disinfection of high-touch surfaces, restroom sanitation, and, in settings like medical and dental offices, clinical-grade protocols. Consistency and documentation matter in a way they rarely do at home.

Equipment

Larger floors, more restrooms, and higher standards call for commercial-grade equipment and supplies — and workflows designed for square footage. It's why a great residential cleaner isn't automatically set up for a workplace, and why matching the professional to the setting matters.

Which You Need

If it's where you live, you need residential cleaning. If it's where you (and staff or customers) work — an office, studio, retail space, or practice — you need commercial cleaning built for that environment. Mixed-use or unsure?
