How to Remove Scratches from Hardwood Floors
Not every scratch needs a pro — but some do. Here's how to tell surface scratches from deep ones, fix what you can, and know when a recoat is the real answer.
Surface vs. Deep Scratches
The single most useful thing to know: is the scratch in the finish or in the wood? Run a fingernail across it — if your nail doesn't catch, it's a surface scratch in the finish (common, and very fixable). If it catches, the scratch has reached the wood and needs more work. Most scratches people worry about are surface-level.
Fixing Light Scratches
Clean the area first, then for hairline finish scratches, a soft buff with a microfiber cloth often blends them. For slightly deeper surface marks, a color-matched blending pen or wax stick fills and disguises them. Work with the grain, wipe away excess, and the scratch effectively disappears. Always match the product to your floor's color and finish.
Deeper Scratches & Gouges
Scratches and gouges that reach bare wood can be filled with a matching wood filler or hard-wax, then sealed — but spot repairs are visible up close. If you have many deep scratches rather than one, spot-fixing becomes a losing game, and a screen and recoat that refreshes the whole floor is the smarter fix.
Pet Scratches
Dog nails are the most common cause of the fine, web-like scratching that dulls a finish over time — especially along the paths pets travel. Keep nails trimmed, add runners or rugs on their routes, and know that a recoat erases the accumulated scratching all at once. Homes with pets simply reach recoat time sooner.
When scratching is widespread, a professional clean and recoat resets the entire finish — far better than chasing individual marks. Request a quote.
When It’s a Recoat
Reach for a recoat when scratches are widespread, the finish looks worn in traffic lanes, or your spot-fixes are starting to show. A fresh acrylic or polyurethane coat restores both protection and appearance across the whole floor. See typical costs to weigh it against ongoing spot repair.
