Agoura Hills is its own city in Los Angeles County, not part of Thousand Oaks: incorporated in 1982, it covers about 7.8 square miles on both sides of the 101 between Westlake Village, Oak Park and Calabasas, with about 7,600 homes. It takes its name from the post office on the Agoure family ranch, and Ladyface Mountain, 2,031 feet, is the landmark the city’s general plan calls its main defining feature.
Most of it was built in the 1970s and 1980s: about 70% of homes are detached single-family houses, with townhomes and apartments making up most of the rest. Old Agoura is different — a semi-rural equestrian neighborhood of old and new houses on large lots, with horse trails along its streets. The city protects four native oak species, and Cheeseboro and Palo Comado canyons open onto the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
Two-thirds of the city is a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. In 2018 the Woolsey Fire forced the whole city to evacuate, and nine families lost their homes. Las Virgenes Municipal Water District reports an average hardness of 142 mg/L (about 8.3 grains per gallon) for 2025 — enough to spot shower glass and stone around fixtures.
