Big Sky is the newest corner of north Simi Valley (93065), at the far north end of Erringer Road below Whiteface Mountain, inside city limits. It takes its name from Big Sky Ranch next door, the movie ranch where “Little House on the Prairie,” “Gunsmoke” and “Rawhide” were filmed — now Ventura County Landmark No. 71. The land went to builders in 2001; Shea, Standard Pacific and D.R. Horton built close to 800 homes, roughly 1,800 to 4,400 sq ft, almost all from the 2000s on.
The Big Sky Homeowners Association runs the community, with two entrances, on Erringer Road and Lost Canyons Drive, and a night security patrol rather than a gate. The 3.5-mile Big Sky Trail runs between them along the hills. Homes this new are cleaned for consistency rather than restoration: open kitchens, large bathrooms and lots of tile and glass.
The hills around it are brush country, and the whole community is in the county fire department’s fire hazard reduction program, so Santa Ana winds bring dust and, in a fire season, ash. Most of the water here is imported State Water Project supply, which Ventura County Waterworks District No. 8 reported at about 148 mg/L of hardness (roughly 8.6 grains per gallon), enough to spot glass and faucets between visits.
