Drywall and construction dust is far finer and lighter than everyday household dust. It stays airborne longer, slips into the smallest gaps, and clings to surfaces with a stubborn film. That's why a normal wipe-down seems to work for a day — and then the dust is back. Clearing it properly takes method, not just effort. It's the core challenge of post-construction cleaning.

How It Travels

Fine dust rides air currents into every room, settles on high surfaces (tops of doors, cabinets, fans, shelves), and — critically — gets pulled into the HVAC system, which then redistributes it every time the air runs. This is why dust reappears on freshly cleaned surfaces for days or even weeks after the work is done.

The Top-Down Method

Always work high to low, because cleaning low first just gets re-dusted when you clean above. The sequence: ceilings, fans, and light fixtures first; then walls, tops of doors and cabinets, trim, and shelves; then fixtures, counters, and inside cabinets/drawers; and floors last. Trap dust with damp microfiber or a HEPA vacuum rather than dry-dusting, which relaunches it into the air.

The HVAC Step Most People Miss

Until the air system is addressed, dust keeps coming back. Replace HVAC filters after construction, and consider having vents and registers cleaned. This is the single most-skipped step — and the reason so many post-remodel homes feel like they can never quite get clean. It's also why a touch-up phase exists.
