Point Dume is the headland at the northern end of Santa Monica Bay, with Zuma Beach to the northwest and the Point Dume State Beach preserve at its tip, a California Historical Landmark. The mesa was treeless chaparral until the 1940s, when it was subdivided, and it filled in slowly after the war with single-story ranch homes of about 2,000 sq ft. Many of those have since been replaced by large custom houses on lots of half an acre to several acres, along streets such as Dume Drive, Wandermere Road and Zumirez Drive.
Some tracts carry deeded keys to the gated paths down to Little Dume beach, and the Point Dume Club, a 297-site manufactured-home community from 1969, sits on the mesa too. The beach below is narrowing: county studies put the loss at about 40 feet between 2002 and 2022. Wind across the open headland carries salt and fine dust onto glass and sills, and beach days send sand back up the hill.
In November 2018 the Woolsey Fire crossed Pacific Coast Highway onto the point and destroyed homes along Wandermere Road and Dume Drive; smoke and ash resets are part of living here. Water comes from Los Angeles County Waterworks District 29, at 140 to 234 mg/L of average hardness by source (2025 report), enough to spot glass and fixtures.
